For what can be termed as a thrilling group-stage actions complimented with drama, upset and breakthrough results, the highly fascinating group-stage of the 1st Pi Niangzen Trophy 2019 has winded up today with 8 (eight) strongest teams lining up for a spectacular quarter-finals at Lamka Public Ground, Churachandpur.

The tournament saw 16(sixteen) strong clubs affiliated under DSA-Churachandpur taking part and after group-stage actions, where all sixteen teams fought with all might, two teams each from a group, altogether eight, have made it to the quarter-finals and that a total of 102 goals-scored underlined the attacking nature of the tournament as an average of 4.25 goals were scored per match.

Amongst the four groups of sixteen teams, only FC Zotal and United Khawzim Brothers recorded 100 percent wins with the latter nodding in 12 goals and conceding one while FC Zotal registered three wins and scored 9 goals but conceded twice. With 3 games played by each team during the group-stage, SYMROPIA FC topped the attacking index with goal-score of an incredible 18 goals averaging 6 goals per match.

On the individual front, S.Thanggoulen Haokip of United Khawzim Brothers lead the goal-scoring chart with 7 goals in 3 games while SYMROPIA FC’s Peter Seiminthang Haokip stay second with 6 goals in 3 games.

Group A, which contained the likes of Ganggam Soccer Club, Lamka Sports Club, Konsham FC and Vengnuam United Sporting, was considered Group of Death prior to the tournament and that the tag thus imposed fully justified as the Group underwent huge dramas and upsets. Despite not making through to the quarter-finals, Vengnuam United Sporting(VENUS) received wide range of public recognition for their strong show during the group-stage and despite having had a squad largely of local and raw talents, they went on to beat Ganggam Soccer Club 2-0, held Lamka SC 1-1 and lost 1-0 to Konsham FC late on thus missing on a place in the quarter-finals quite agonizingly.

On a wider range of summary, the biggest upset during the group-stage being VENUS’ 2-0 win over of Ganggam Soccer Club and the District champions’ failure to move past the group-stage while Bungmual Youth Club’s failure to get past the group-stage is also another upset story of the tournament. Meanwhile, the biggest breakthrough made by a club during the same group-stage could well be Headquarters Athletic Union, who despite losing their opening group match 5-0 to United Khawzim Brothers, went on to go through to the quarter-finals.

With the tournament having been structured well by the organizers to pay huge regards to participating clubs and also to promote and encourage players, all quarter-finalists are guaranteed to receive cash amount of Rs. 5,000/- in minimum plus share of matchday ticketing revenue. Moreover, a Man-of-the-Match Award will also be given to the most outstanding player of the match from the quarter-finals onwards.

The highly anticipated quarter-finals will be held from 29th June, 2019 to 3rd July, 2019 while the two semi-final matches have been scheduled to take place on 5th and 6th July, 2019.
