In yet another day of upset, Koite Youth Union condemned United Khawzim Brothers to their fifth straight defeat in the quarter-finals of open football tournaments as they claimed a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory after regulation period of the highly entertaining match ended in a 1-1 draw in today’s thrilling quarter-finals match of the ongoing 1st Pi Niangzen Trophy 2019 played at Lamka Public Ground, Churachandpur.

The highly anticipated quarter-final match began with United Khawzim Brothers taking an early lead through Robinson Khongsai’s clever finish in as early as the 3rd minute and despite Koite Youth Union pressing high at times in a bid to come back into the match it was Koite Youth Union goalkeeper Lenjapao Kipgen, who was the busiest man on the pitch as he produced strings of brilliant saves keeping the advancing UKB front men at bay and the first-half ended 1-0 in favour of UKB.

The second-half saw both sides concentrating their play mainly at the middle and although Koite Youth Union managed to keep better share of possession, it was the Khawzim Brothers who appeared more like extending lead with Paosei Haokip putting his effort just wide and Robinson Khongsai having his fierce shot coming off the crossbar and towards the closing stages of the match, United Khawzim Brothers were made to pay the price for their lack of cutting edge when S.Boilal Haokip(5) pulled level with a stunning free-kick in the 73rd-minute and despite United Khawzim Brothers pressing high up the field and digging deep in search of the winning goal, Koite Youth Union held firm to hold the match into a penalty shoot-out as the match ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, only 2 players out of 5 from UKB managed to overcome nerve-wrenching spot-kick while 3 out of 5 from Koite Youth Union hit the target thus Koite Youth Union emerged 3-2 winners via penalty shoot-out while winless streak of United Khawzim Brothers in open football tournament has reached an incredible 5 times in a row.

With his brilliant goal-keeping during the full 90 minutes and the two crucial saves he had during the penalty shoot-out, Koite Youth Union goalkeeper Lenjapao Kipgen was adjudged Man-of-the-Match.
