A Call to Covenant Before Intimacy
Main Text: Genesis 2:24; 1 Corinthians 7:2–5; Hebrews 13:4
STRONG INTRODUCTION
Church, let me begin with a statement that may sound controversial:
SEX IS NOT THE SIN.
SEX OUTSIDE GOD’S DESIGN IS THE SIN.
And here is another statement:
Marriage before sex is not a sin.
Sex before marriage is.
Why?
Because God did not create sex as something dirty, shameful, or evil.
God created sex.
But God also created marriage.
The problem is not that sex exists.
The problem is when we take something God created for a covenant and turn it into something we consume without covenant.
Today, our culture says:
“If you love each other, you can have sex.”
But the Bible says:
Love does not remove the need for covenant.
Our culture says:
“You need to try each other first before you get married.”
But biblical marriage says:
You don’t test covenant by practicing intimacy outside the covenant.
And sometimes even Christians become confused.
We hear people say:
“Pastor, isn’t marriage before sex a sin?”
No!
In fact, biblically, the order is very clear:
COVENANT FIRST.
INTIMACY SECOND.
Genesis 2:24 says:
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”
Notice the order.
Joined to his wife—then one flesh.
Not:
one flesh first—then decide whether to become husband and wife.
God’s design is not complicated.
Marriage establishes the covenant.
Sex expresses the covenant.
So today, I want to give you three simple but powerful truths.
1. GOD CREATED SEX, BUT HE DESIGNED IT FOR COVENANT
Let’s settle something first.
Sex is not inherently sinful.
If sex itself were sinful, God would never have created marriage with sexual intimacy as part of it.
Genesis 2:24 says:
“They shall become one flesh.”
That is sexual language, but it is placed inside the context of marriage.
God created sexual intimacy to be experienced within a relationship of covenant, commitment, faithfulness, and responsibility.
That’s why Hebrews 13:4 says:
“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled.”
Notice the phrase:
“Marriage bed.”
The Bible doesn’t condemn the marriage bed.
It honors it.
The problem is when something designed for the marriage bed is taken outside the marriage covenant.
Think about it this way:
Fire is good in a fireplace.
Fire outside the fireplace can destroy a house.
The problem isn’t fire.
The problem is fire outside its God-designed boundaries.
Sex is powerful.
It creates emotional attachment.
It creates physical bonding.
It carries reproductive potential.
And it communicates something profound:
“I give myself to you.”
That’s why God didn’t simply say, “Have sex whenever you feel like it.”
He created marriage as the covenant framework for that intimacy.
APPLICATION
Young people, listen carefully:
Don’t allow culture to define what God has already defined.
You don’t need to hate sex.
You need to honor God’s design for sex.
And married couples, don’t be ashamed of sexual intimacy within marriage.
God is not embarrassed by what He created.
What God wants is not the destruction of sexuality.
He wants the sanctification of sexuality.
2. LOVE IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR COVENANT
This is where many people get deceived.
They say:
“But Pastor, we love each other.”
I believe you.
But love does not automatically make every action biblical.
You can genuinely love someone and still do something that God doesn’t approve.
David loved Bathsheba.
Samson had strong feelings.
Amnon had intense desire.
But emotions alone do not determine righteousness.
Biblical love is not simply what you feel.
Biblical love is also what you choose to honor.
1 Corinthians 13 teaches us that love does not simply pursue its desires.
Real love is patient.
Real love is kind.
Real love is not self-seeking.
And that means:
If I really love you, I will not pressure you to violate God’s Word for the sake of my desire.
Let me say that again.
If I love you, I will not ask you to compromise your convictions so I can satisfy my cravings.
That’s not love.
That’s selfishness wearing the clothes of romance.
Somebody says:
“If you really love me, prove it.”
No.
You don’t prove love by having sex.
You prove love by honoring the person you love.
A man who truly loves a woman should be able to say:
“I want you, but I will wait for you.”
A woman who truly loves a man should be able to say:
“I desire you, but I will honor God with you.”
That’s maturity.
Because desire says, “I want you now.”
But covenant says,
“I will honor you for a lifetime.”
That’s the difference.
APPLICATION
Don’t confuse:
CHEMISTRY with COVENANT.
Don’t confuse:
ATTRACTION with COMMITMENT.
Don’t confuse:
DESIRE with DESTINY.
And don’t confuse:
SEXUAL INTIMACY with MARRIAGE.
You can have intimacy without covenant.
But biblical marriage calls us to covenant before intimacy.
3. GOD CALLS US TO HONOR MARRIAGE, NOT JUST AVOID SEX
Sometimes Christianity is presented negatively:
“Don’t have sex.”
“Don’t do this.”
“Don’t do that.”
But biblical holiness is more than simply avoiding something.
Holiness is learning to honor what God honors.
Hebrews 13:4 says:
“Marriage is to be held in honor among all.”
That’s the positive command.
Honor marriage.
Don’t treat marriage like a contract you can enter casually and abandon easily.
Don’t treat your body like a product.
Don’t treat another person’s emotions like an experiment.
Don’t treat sexual intimacy like entertainment.
Honor marriage.
And this is why marriage before sex is not sinful.
Actually, biblically speaking, marriage provides the covenant context in which sexual intimacy is honored rather than violated.
1 Corinthians 7:2 says:
“But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.”
Paul isn’t promoting sexual immorality.
He’s directing sexual desire toward God’s covenant design.
In other words:
God doesn’t merely say, “Control your desire.”
God says, “Understand where your desire belongs.”
There is a place for sexual intimacy.
Marriage.
There is a place for commitment.
Marriage.
There is a place for becoming one flesh.
Marriage.
There is a place for lifelong faithfulness.
Marriage.
And when those things are brought together under God’s covenant, sexuality becomes something that can be honored rather than something that needs to be hidden.
CONCLUSION — COVENANT BEFORE INTIMACY
Church, let me close with this:
The world says:
“Sex first. Commitment later.”
God’s design says:
“Covenant first. Intimacy within the covenant.”
The world says:
“If you love each other, that’s enough.”
God says:
“Honor one another.”
The world says:
“Follow your feelings.”
God says:
“Follow My Word.”
The world says:
“You have to try the relationship before commitment.”
God says:
“Commitment is not an experiment.”
And perhaps somebody listening today has already failed.
Maybe you crossed a boundary.
Maybe you had sex before marriage.
Maybe you lived together.
Maybe you compromised your convictions.
Maybe you are carrying shame.
Listen carefully:
Your failure does not have to become your identity.
There is forgiveness in Christ.
There is restoration.
There is grace.
There is a way back.
The message today is not:
“You are hopeless because you failed.”
The message is:
“You can return to God’s design.”
If you’re not married, honor God by waiting.
If you’re dating, establish boundaries.
If you’re engaged, don’t act married before you’re married.
If you’re married, honor your covenant.
And if you’ve fallen, don’t hide from God—run back to Him.
Because God’s standard is not designed to destroy you.
It is designed to protect what He created.
So remember these three truths:
1. GOD CREATED SEX, BUT HE DESIGNED IT FOR COVENANT.
2. LOVE IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR COVENANT.
3. GOD CALLS US TO HONOR MARRIAGE, NOT JUST AVOID SEX.
And let me leave you with this:
DON’T GIVE A COVENANT PRIVILEGE TO A RELATIONSHIP THAT HAS NOT YET ENTERED COVENANT.
Sex is powerful.
Love is powerful.
Marriage is powerful.
But when they are aligned with God’s design—
they become a testimony of His wisdom, faithfulness, and grace.
COVENANT BEFORE INTIMACY.
COMMITMENT BEFORE CONSUMMATION.
GOD’S DESIGN BEFORE CULTURE’S DESIRE.
Amen.
